Family of Four Perishes in Suspected Arson Attack in Namutumba

Tragedy struck in the early hours of the morning as a couple and their two young children were killed in a suspected arson attack in Buyoboya village, Bulange sub-county of Namutumba district. The incident, which occurred around 1:00 AM, left the community in shock and mourning.
The deceased have been identified as 25 year old Mukisa Mukulu, his 30 year old wife Annet Namagunga, and their daughters Judith, aged 7, and Sylvia, aged 5. Witnesses believe the fire was set as an act of revenge by a former husband of Namagunga.
Paul Kayigwa, a local resident, speculated that jealousy might have motivated the crime. He reported that Namagunga had previously been married to three men and had just returned to her home after negotiations with her other spouses. Kayigwa expressed his outrage over the attack, emphasizing that innocent lives, particularly those of the children, were lost due to this tragic event.

Neighbor Yowana Mukose Ngora recounted the terrifying moment when he noticed the house engulfed in flames. Despite the rain that fell earlier that night, the fire blazed fiercely. Ngora and other villagers attempted to extinguish the flames but were unsuccessful. They struggled to summon help in the darkness, resulting in the family being unable to escape the fire.
Local council chairperson Fred Mulondo stated that Namagunga was newly married to Mukulu and did not have children with him, raising suspicions about the involvement of her former husbands. Mulondo urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
John Bosco Mubiito, the Resident District Commissioner of Namutumba, visited the scene and condemned the brutal act. He pledged to collaborate with the police and other security agencies to apprehend those responsible.
Police investigators arrived at the scene to gather evidence and subsequently transferred the victims’ bodies to Iganga Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations. As of now, police have not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
This tragic event highlights the growing concern about violence stemming from jealousy and disputes within relationships in the region. The community continues to grieve the loss of these innocent lives while calling for swift justice.
