Traffic Updates: Roads to Be Closed for AU Summit in Kampala on 9th Jan – List of Affected Routes
Kampala is getting ready to host the African Union (AU) extraordinary summit from 9th to 11th January 2025. This important event will bring together over 2,000 delegates from 49 member countries to discuss the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Strategy and Recommendation Plan for 2026 to 2035.
To ensure everything runs smoothly and safely for the attendees, the Traffic Police have announced major changes to traffic in the area. Several roads leading to and around the summit venue will be temporarily closed or diverted. The main route for the summit will be the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, which connects Entebbe International Airport to Speke Resort Munyonyo, where the event will take place. This road will be closely monitored, and diversions will happen whenever delegates are travelling.
Here are some important traffic control measures:
- Road diversions: Traffic will be redirected at key points including Mpala, Kisubi, Kajansi Flyover, Serena-Kigo, Mutungo-Kitiko Traffic Lights, and Munyonyo Roundabout.
- Security checks: There will be a security checkpoint at Munyonyo Roundabout to ensure safety.
- Diversions for non-summit traffic: Vehicles not attending the summit will be redirected to Salama Road and Buziga Road.
- Changes on the Northern Bypass: There will also be diversions on the Northern Bypass at Busega Flyover and at Sentema, Nansana, and Busega interchanges.
Additionally, motorcycles will not be allowed access to Kajansi, Munyonyo, or the summit venue during this time.
Travellers using Entebbe International Airport are advised to plan their journeys in advance to avoid delays caused by these traffic changes. Traffic officers will be present in the area to help guide everyone during this busy period.
