Gideon Accuses Ssemakadde of Mocking Kiiza Eron, Convincing Him to Apologise for Freedom in Court
Gideon Nova Kwizera recently took to social media to accuse Isaac Ssemakadde, the president of the Uganda Law Society, of mocking fellow lawyer Kiiza Eron. Kwizera expressed his anger over what he saw as Ssemakadde's attempt to persuade Eron to apologise for his freedom. He questioned how Ssemakadde could ask such a thing from a human rights lawyer who was simply doing his job.
Kwizera pointed out that Eron had faced serious problems, including claims of provocation and public assault. He argued that Eron had nothing to apologise for, as he was just representing his client and standing up for justice.
In his post, Kwizera also raised doubts about the idea of a "safe corridor," suggesting that it showed hypocrisy in the legal profession. He claimed that Ssemakadde's actions were a betrayal not only to Eron but also to the values of the legal community in Uganda. He called Ssemakadde a "charlatan," showing his strong disappointment in what he viewed as a lack of professionalism.
On January 7, 2025, the General Court Martial in Makindye sentenced Eron Kiiza to nine months in prison for contempt of court. Concerns were raised about the trial because Kiiza was not allowed to defend himself, and the charges against him were not clearly explained. Additionally, he was not given a chance to speak before the sentence was given.
As of now, Ssemakadde has not replied to Kwizera's accusations, leaving many people wondering about the impact of this situation on accountability and support among lawyers in Uganda.
