A horrific accident in Bujaabe Village, Nakitoma Subcounty, Nakasongola District, has left two people dead and twelve others injured.
The incident took place on Tuesday evening, around 6:08 PM, and involved three vehicles: an Isuzu Elf truck, a Toyota Hiace van, and a Nile Star company bus.
According to Savannah Region Police spokesperson, ASP Sam Twiineamazima, early investigations show that the accident was caused by a mechanical failure.
The front tire of the Nile Star bus, with registration number UBD 215R, detached while the bus was following the Toyota Hiace van, which had registration number UBR 783N. The bus lost control and crashed head-on into an Isuzu Elf truck, registered as UBP 557B, coming from Kampala.
The driver of the Isuzu Elf truck died instantly at the scene, while a young child in the Toyota Hiace van later passed away after being rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital. Sadly, both of the victims have not been identified yet.
In addition to the two fatalities, twelve other passengers were injured, with injuries ranging from minor to severe. They were quickly taken to Kyinyogoga Hospital for medical treatment.
Local residents were shaken by the tragedy. One witness, James Odongo, described the chaos: "We heard a loud bang, and when we arrived, there was chaos everywhere. People were trapped in the Vehicles, and some were screaming for Help."
Police responded swiftly to the scene, gathering evidence and ensuring that victims were taken to safety. "The victims were taken to Kyinyogoga Hospital, and the bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary for a postmortem examination," said ASP Twiineamazima.
The vehicles involved in the crash have been towed to Nakitoma Police Station for further inspection.
