“We Will Defend Ourselves, We Will Never Accept to Die Like the Congolese” – Burundi Warns Kagame

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye issued a clear warning to Rwanda, stating that any act of aggression will be met with a strong response. Speaking near the Rwandan border in Bugabira, Ndayishimiye’s message points out the growing tensions between the two East African nations.

The tensions between Burundi and Rwanda have a long history, with past rivalries and disputes affecting relations. These tensions have been reignited by recent accusations from both sides of supporting rebel groups operating along their borders.

The latest point of conflict is Burundi’s action in South Kivu, DRC, where the country has sent troops to target the Red Tabara rebels, a group which Burundi claims is supported by Rwanda. This comes as M23 rebels, also said to be backed by Rwanda, move towards the important city of Bukavu.

“Let no one lower their guard,” Ndayishimiye told the people of Burundi.

He said the country is ready to defend itself against any threat. "Whoever attacks us, we will attack him,” he said, stressing Burundi’s determination to protect its sovereignty.

He also expressed concern for the Congolese people, saying that Burundi would not allow itself to suffer in the same way. “We, the Burundians, will never accept to die like the Congolese,.” he added.

This situation has wider consequences for regional stability. Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has accused Burundi of supporting certain Congolese forces, which has made the situation more tense.

Burundi is also concerned that if the M23 rebels capture Bukavu, it could give Rwanda a stronger position near Burundi’s border, which may lead to further instability.

As President Ndayishimiye’s warning spreads across the region, the need for peaceful solutions is evident. Both countries seem to be preparing for potential conflict, but finding diplomatic solutions will be important for longterm peace.
