"He Collapsed the Previous Evening," Njala Reveals Prisons Boss’s Update on Besigye’s Health

Uganda Prisons Commissioner General Johnson Byabashaija stated that there is "no cause for alarm" regarding the health of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.

In a conversation with journalist Simon Kaggwa Njala, Byabashaija confirmed that Besigye was receiving medical care from his personal doctor after going on a hunger strike. This came after Besigye had collapsed the previous evening, prompting medical attention.

Besigye, who has been in Luzira Maximum Prison for nearly three months, was taken to a medical facility at Bugolobi Village Mall under tight security. MP Francis Mwijukye, who was at the scene, said Besigye arrived in a wheelchair and appeared weak.

Security forces closely guarded the clinic, limiting movement and access. However, Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura confirmed that Besigye was receiving treatment.

Besigye was arrested on November 16, 2024, and charged with treason. The Supreme Court ruled that all cases in the military court to be transferred to civilian courts or be dismissed. However, he remains in custody under charges from the court martial, raising questions about the government's adherence to court rulings.

His court appearances have raised further concerns, with his supporters noting his frail condition and difficulty breathing. However, prison officials maintain that he is receiving proper care.

Besigye’s continued detention and concerns about his health have increased political tensions. His supporters argue that the government is not following court orders, while authorities insist that he is being treated fairly.
