Christians in Ibanda Urged to Embrace Repentance and Humility During Lent

hristians in Ibanda District have been called to reflect on their lives and embrace repentance as they begin the Lenten season, a key message delivered during Ash Wednesday services.

Speaking at St. Bruno Nyakatokye Catholic Church in Bisheshe Division, Rev. Fr. Everisto Ariyo emphasized the significance of prayer, self-reflection, and acts of charity during this sacred period.

“Ash Wednesday reminds us that we are dust, and to dust we shall return. This should prompt us to turn back to God and seek His mercy,” Fr. Ariyo said while administering ashes on the foreheads of the faithful.

He urged Christians to use Lent as a time for spiritual renewal, avoiding actions that distance them from God. “Lent is an opportunity for transformation. It calls us to change our ways and embrace God’s grace through repentance,” he added.

For those unable to fast due to health or other reasons, Fr. Ariyo encouraged acts of charity as an alternative. “If you are unable to fast, you can still participate in Lent by helping those in need through almsgiving,” he advised.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season leading up to Easter, a time of penance, prayer, and fasting as Christians prepare for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection.
