Operation Parent Hosts Drug Prevention Training Event for Families Amid Decline in Overdose Deaths
Saturday, the national non-profit Operation Parent organized a drug prevention training event for families in LaGrange, shedding light on the ongoing battle against drug addiction in Kentucky. With more than 1,900 Kentuckians losing their lives to drug overdoses last year, the latest Kentucky Drug Overdose Fatality Report shows a nearly 10% decrease in overdose deaths from the previous year. Despite the progress highlighted in the report, Governor Andy Beshear emphasized that the fight against drug addiction is far from over.
Empowering Parents Through Education
At the event held at City Place, parents were equipped with valuable tools and insights on how to effectively communicate with their children about drug prevention. Operation Parent founder Jean Schumn emphasized the significance of understanding not just the drugs themselves, but also the various ways children access them, including through social media and other channels. Addressing mental health aspects related to drug use was also highlighted as a crucial component of prevention efforts.
Keynote Speakers and Inspirational Stories
Guest speakers at the event, such as Attorney General Russell Coleman and former Attorney General Daniel Cameron, discussed Kentucky's opioid epidemic and initiatives aimed at combating drug addiction. Families had the opportunity to hear inspiring narratives of individuals who have successfully overcome addiction challenges. Denise and Keith Heid shared their journey of supporting their daughter through an opioid addiction, emphasizing the importance of hope and community in the recovery process. Their daughter, Bree Heid, now advocates for drug prevention and shares her story to educate others.
Aiming for Prevention and Support
Following treatment, Bree Heid actively engages in inspiring individuals to pursue sobriety and highlights the vital role of prevention events in connecting families with essential resources. She stressed the significance of community support in addressing addiction issues and the importance of reinforcing efforts to assist those in need. As overdose deaths show a decline, events like the one hosted by Operation Parent play a critical role in fostering awareness and support networks to break the cycle of addiction.
