Managing Director Found Dead Just Days After Company's Head of Finance was Brutally Shot Dead in Broad Daylight!
Double Tragedy Rocks Eastern Cape: Company Boss Found Dead Days After Finance Head's Murder
KuGompo, Eastern Cape – A chilling sequence of events has gripped the Eastern Cape, as the managing director of Mrhawu Holdings, Sicelo Ntengento, was found dead just days after his former head of finance, Anda “Peach” Mlondleni, was brutally murdered outside the company's premises. The twin tragedies have cast a dark shadow over the business community, prompting urgent calls for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding both deaths.
The Assassination of Anda Mlondleni
Anda Mlondleni, a 32-year-old former Head of Finance at Mrhawu Holdings, met a violent end on Monday, 13 July 2026. She was gunned down in broad daylight outside the company's offices in Berea, KuGompo. Police reports indicate that a lone assailant approached Mlondleni as she was leaving the premises, firing one shot. As she lay on the ground, the attacker fired two more shots at close range, bringing the total to six shots according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). The assailant then stole her mobile phone before fleeing on foot. Mlondleni died at the scene.
The events leading up to her murder are particularly poignant. Mlondleni had been suspended from Mrhawu Holdings earlier in July, with a disciplinary hearing held on 2 July. However, the outcome of this hearing had not yet been communicated to her. On the morning of her death, Mlondleni received a call from her former employer, requesting her presence at the office. Her family confirmed that she arrived at the premises around 11:00 AM and, shortly after, telephoned her sister to say the meeting had concluded and she was ready for collection. It was moments after this call, around 10:30 to 11:00 AM, that the fatal attack occurred.
Arrest and Allegations of Police Brutality
Following an intensive police investigation, 32-year-old Lukholo Kafile was arrested on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, in Beacon Bay. He has since appeared in the KuGompo Magistrate's Court, facing serious charges including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The State alleges that ammunition and clothing matching those worn by the suspected gunman were discovered during a search of Kafile's residence.
However, Kafile's court appearance was marked by startling allegations of police brutality. His legal representative claimed that Cambridge police officers had taken Kafile to a forest where he was assaulted and coerced into confessing. It was further alleged that he sustained injuries to his ribs, wrists, and neck, and was repeatedly denied medical attention. His attorney instructed him to display his wrist injuries to the court. While the State asserted it had not observed any visible injuries, it did not oppose an order granting Kafile access to medical treatment. Furthermore, his attorney stated that police had twice refused Kafile his right to legal representation, despite appeals to senior officers at the Cambridge police station. The case has been postponed to 11 September for further investigation, with an additional suspect reportedly still at large. Kafile is not currently applying for bail, which the State has indicated it would oppose given the gravity of the charges.
The Untimely Death of Sicelo Ntengento
Just three days after Mlondleni's murder and mere hours after Kafile's court appearance, Sicelo Ntengento, the 60-year-old managing director of Mrhawu Holdings, was found dead. His body was discovered in Tsholomnqa village, Jojweni location, on Thursday evening, 16 July 2026, around 16:30. Police have confirmed his death and have registered a case of inquest for investigation. Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa stated, "Police can confirm that a case of inquest has been registered for investigation following the death of a 60-year-old male at Jojweni location in Tsholomnqa (KuGompo) at about 16:30 on Thursday. According to preliminary information, police were alerted to the incident and attended the scene, where the person was found deceased. The circumstances surrounding the death are currently being investigated. No further details can be disclosed at this stage as the investigation is ongoing."
Ntengento's attorney, Asanda Pakade, whom Ntengento had previously referred News24 to for comments on Mlondleni's death, confirmed his passing. Pakade issued a statement: "We confirm that Mr Sicelo Ntengento tragically passed away on 16 July 2026. The circumstances surrounding his death are the subject of a police investigation. The family requests privacy as they mourn the loss of a husband, father and grandfather." The proximity of Ntengento's death to Mlondleni's murder and the subsequent arrest has naturally raised questions, though police have yet to establish any direct links.
Mrhawu Holdings: A Business Under Scrutiny
Mrhawu Holdings, based in East London, is a diversified company offering a range of services including security, investigations, cleaning, and event hire, such as mobile fridges and PA systems. Sicelo Ntengento was listed as the Managing Director on LinkedIn, with Athenkosi Ntengento serving as Operations Manager. The company's varied business interests, particularly in security and investigations, add another layer of complexity to the unfolding tragedy. The reasons behind Mlondleni's suspension and subsequent dismissal remain unclear, and the family has called for a transparent and impartial investigation into her death, explicitly stating they are not drawing conclusions about the motive or accusing anyone of involvement.
A Broader Context of Crime in the Eastern Cape
These incidents unfold against a backdrop of escalating crime and violence in the Eastern Cape, which has consistently reported one of the highest murder rates in South Africa, with 14.3 murders per 100,000 people. The province has also been plagued by a surge in organised crime, particularly extortion syndicates and the so-called "construction mafia." These groups demand "protection fees" from businesses, often resorting to violence against those who refuse to comply. In Mthatha, for instance, businesses have been forced to close due to alleged extortion, and over 180 infrastructure projects worth R63 billion across South Africa have been disrupted by these syndicates. While there is no direct evidence linking these broader criminal trends to the current case, the climate of fear and lawlessness they create provides a grim context for the events at Mrhawu Holdings.
The Targeting of Finance Officials: A Disturbing Pattern
The murder of Anda Mlondleni, a finance official, also echoes a disturbing pattern observed in South Africa where individuals in financial positions are targeted, often in connection with uncovering illicit activities. A notable incident occurred in March 2026, when Martha Mani Rantsofu, a finance official at Emfuleni Municipality, was shot dead. It was alleged that Rantsofu had uncovered fraud, and her murder was seen by some as an attempt to silence her. While the specifics of Mlondleni's suspension from Mrhawu Holdings are not yet public, the fact that she was a finance head and was called to the office on the day of her murder, following a disciplinary hearing, raises uncomfortable parallels with other cases where financial impropriety may have been a motive. The family's call for a transparent investigation underscores the need to explore all possible angles, including any potential links to financial irregularities within the company.
The Road Ahead: Justice and Answers
The Eastern Cape community, already grappling with high crime rates, now faces the unsettling reality of a double tragedy involving prominent business figures. The Mlondleni family, devastated by their loss, is preparing for Anda's funeral, scheduled for 25 July in Shixini village, Willowvale. They continue to appeal for justice and a thorough investigation into her murder.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings against Lukholo Kafile are set to resume on 11 September. The ongoing investigation is expected to include the collection of additional witness statements, ballistic reports, post-mortem results, and a review of CCTV footage. The revelation of an outstanding suspect further complicates the case, suggesting a wider network of involvement. The allegations of police assault against Kafile also warrant serious attention, as they could potentially compromise the integrity of the investigation and any subsequent trial.
For the family of Sicelo Ntengento, the sudden loss of a husband, father, and grandfather adds another layer of grief and mystery to an already tragic situation. The police inquest into his death will be crucial in determining whether his passing was coincidental or connected to the events surrounding Anda Mlondleni's murder. The community watches on, hoping for clarity and justice in a case that has laid bare the vulnerabilities within the business sector and the pervasive challenges of crime in the Eastern Cape.
