Uganda’s political landscape has been reshaped following the Jan. 15 general election, with the ruling National Resistance Movement maintaining a dominant majority despite significant challenges in key regions. The newly compiled list of legislators for the 12th Parliament reveals a chamber defined by veteran incumbents and a surge of first-time representatives.

The electoral results, declared by the Electoral Commission on Jan. 17, saw President Yoweri Museveni secure a seventh term with 71.65 percent of the vote. While the NRM swept many constituencies in northern and eastern Uganda, the opposition National Unity Platform, led by Robert Kyagulanyi, established a firm stronghold in the central region and urban centers.

This legislative roster emerges amid a period of intense political friction. Museveni has attributed the survival of the opposition to low turnout among NRM supporters, while opposition leaders continue to reject the official outcomes, citing biometric failures and a nationwide internet blackout. The incoming Parliament will face immediate pressure to address concerns over state security, the detention of political figures, and the country’s economic recovery.
