UN chief says denial of statehood for Palestinians is unacceptable
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasized the imperative recognition of the Palestinian people's right to establish their own state.
Speaking at the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Uganda on Saturday, Guterres condemned the refusal to accept a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians, as well as the denial of statehood for the Palestinian people, deeming these actions unacceptable.
During his address, Guterres expressed deep concern over the unprecedented destruction of Gaza and the high number of civilian casualties inflicted by the Israeli Army within a short period.
He highlighted the tragic loss of 152 UN staff members, emphasizing the heartbreak for the organization, their families, and those they were serving in Gaza.
"I will persist in urging an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages," Guterres stated.
He drew attention to the dire situation in Gaza, where people are not only dying from bombings and bullets but also from the lack of basic necessities such as food, clean water, and access to functioning hospitals.
Guterres cautioned that the rejection of a two-state solution would perpetuate a conflict that poses a significant threat to global peace and security.
He stressed that this stance would further polarize and empower extremists worldwide.
"Guided by the solutions being discussed here and the spirit of trust, understanding, and solidarity that has infused the NAM from the start, I am confident that together we can confront these challenges and make the right choices in the future," Guterres affirmed.
Guterres also highlighted the operationalization of the long-awaited loss and damage fund at COP 28, aimed at supporting countries most vulnerable to climate change.
However, he expressed disappointment over the minimal contributions received thus far.
He urged the Non-Aligned Movement to hold leaders accountable for fulfilling their commitments on climate finance this year, emphasizing the critical link between peace and sustainable development.
The ongoing bloodshed in Gaza was triggered by an attack on Israel by Hamas fighters on October 7.
Since then, Israel's relentless bombardment and ground offensive have led to the deaths of at least 24,927 people in Gaza, predominantly women and children, as reported by the Hamas government's health ministry.
Recently , Guterres appealed for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
The United States, Israel's main ally and key supporter in its conflict with Hamas, has also recently reiterated its support for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
In recent days, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has restated his opposition to the creation of a viable Palestinian state, drawing criticism from his American ally
