Mityana Man Jailed 17 Years for Arson, Attempted Murder of Sister

The Chief Magistrate's Court in Mityana has sentenced a 27-year-old man to 17 years in prison for setting his family's house ablaze after a failed attempt to kill his sister in a violent domestic attack.

The Chief Magistrate's Court in Mityana has sentenced a 27-year-old man to 17 years' imprisonment after finding him guilty of setting his family's house on fire and attempting to kill his sister in a brutal domestic attack.

Kabogoza Henry, a resident of Kiyinda B Cell in Busimbi Division, Mityana District, was convicted after the prosecution proved that he violently assaulted his sister before torching the family home.

Court heard that on the day of the incident, Kabogoza attacked his sister while she was at home, grabbing her by the neck before arming himself first with a panga and later a knife in an attempt to slash and stab her.

“The accused relentlessly attacked the victim and attempted to inflict fatal injuries. Her survival was only made possible through the timely intervention of members of the public,” the prosecution told the court.

Witnesses intervened and rescued the woman before she could sustain life-threatening injuries.

The court heard that after the failed attack, Kabogoza entered the family house, locked himself inside, poured petrol around the premises and deliberately set the building on fire before fleeing.

Although residents managed to extinguish the flames, the house and all the family's belongings were destroyed, leaving the victims homeless.

During sentencing, Resident Senior State Attorney Wasswa Bengo asked the court to impose a 20-year prison sentence, arguing that the offences were premeditated and demonstrated extreme violence.

“The convict committed multiple offences, including arson and assault, which caused enormous suffering to the victims. His actions were deliberate, premeditated, and he has shown no remorse,” Bengo submitted.

Chief Magistrate Aisha Nabukeera found Kabogoza guilty and sentenced him to 17 years in prison.

In her judgment, the magistrate observed that the attack endangered human life, destroyed family property and inflicted lasting emotional and financial hardship on the victims.

The sentence falls short of the 20 years sought by the prosecution but reflects the gravity of the offences, the court said.

The conviction has been welcomed as a strong warning against domestic violence and deliberate destruction of property, with judicial officers reiterating that violent crimes committed against family members will attract severe punishment.
