Four Bukwo Education officials arrested over forgery

Police in Bukwo District have arrested and detained four education officials over allegations of inflating learner enrolment figures at Kabei Seed Secondary School, resulting in the suspected diversion of government funds meant for the school.

The suspects are, Mary Kiplimo, the acting District Education Officer; Isaac Kisoro, a District Inspector of Schools; Michael Naikima, the Inspector of Schools for Too County; and Ronald Teko, the headteacher of Kabei Seed Secondary School.

Sipi Regional Police spokesperson Fredmark Chesang confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue. He added that the four will be presented to court on Monday, August 17, to face charges of neglect of duty, conspiracy to cause financial loss, corruption and abuse of office.

Bukwo Resident District Commissioner George Owanyi said the arrests followed an on-the-spot headcount of learners conducted at the school by security and education officials. According to Owanyi, the exercise established that the school had only 339 learners, yet 991 learners had reportedly been declared to the Ministry of Education and Sports.
