FDC’s Amuriat Steps Down, Endorses Mafabi for Presidency

Engineer Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the leader of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, has decided to withdraw from the 2026 presidential race. Instead, he is supporting MP Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the party’s secretary general, to be the FDC’s candidate in the upcoming election.
Amuriat shared this news at a press conference in Najjankumbi, Kampala, on Monday, September 30, 2024. He expressed his trust in Mafabi’s leadership skills and vision for the future of the country.
“After talking with my supporters and thinking carefully, I believe Nandala Mafabi is the right person to lead our party and the nation toward a better future,” Amuriat stated.
He emphasized that his endorsement does not prevent others from running for the party presidency, as there are established rules for this process.
“We encourage anyone who wants to run for the party presidency to do so, as allowed by our party’s rules,” he added.
Amuriat also invited members of the FDC Katonga Faction who wish to leave that group to return to FDC, emphasizing that the party is open to everyone.
Nandala Mafabi is known for his strong views on governance and accountability, and he has gained significant support from FDC members. Amuriat’s backing is likely to strengthen Mafabi’s campaign as he prepares to take on the current government.
Political expert Dr. Sarah Kanyike noted that Amuriat’s decision could change the dynamics of the upcoming election and help unify opposition forces behind Mafabi.
“This move might bring together votes and create a stronger challenge to the ruling party with Nandala in charge,” said Dr. Kanyike.
She added that many in the political community are now watching closely to see how this endorsement will influence the strategies of other candidates and the overall election scene as the 2026 presidential race approaches.
“With Amuriat stepping aside, people are curious about how Mafabi will mobilize FDC support and unite a divided party,” she said.
