This morning in Mbarara City, residents clashed with police during a protest over the long wait for repairs to Katete Bridge.
The bridge, which has been in bad shape for a while, has caused frustration among locals, prompting the demonstration. Police fired warning shots to break up the crowd, who were demanding that work on the bridge begins immediately.
The ongoing delay has disrupted daily life, with many residents upset by the lack of action despite multiple promises from the city’s leaders.
“We’ve waited for months, and it’s hurting our businesses,” said one resident. Another, Asuman Tumusime, added, “They keep telling us the repairs will start soon, but nothing has happened. We’re tired of waiting.”
The bridge, crucial for local transport, has been closed to vehicles for a long time, leaving only pedestrians and motorcycles to use it. This has severely impacted local trade and movement.
Amina Naluyima, the city’s communications officer, assured residents that the UPDF Engineers Brigade is ready to start the project. “All necessary steps have been completed, and work on the bridge will begin soon,” she said. Despite her reassurance, many residents remain anxious, waiting for visible progress.
