Soda Drinkers at Risk: What Experts Are Saying

Experts have raised concerns about the frequent consumption of soda, warning that the habit can lead to serious health problems.
Joy Ouma, a nutritionist at Aga Khan University Hospital, explains that beverages like soda provide an immediate energy boost but can negatively impact a person’s emotional state.
She elaborates, “The high sugar content in soda causes a rapid increase in blood sugar levels, leading to emotional instability. Additionally, frequent consumers of these drinks are at risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, kidney issues, and dental problems.”

Dr. Ouma adds that soda drinkers may also experience dehydration, increased stomach acid, and gas. When asked if sodas have any health benefits, Dr. Ouma responded, “These drinks contain no calories that are beneficial and lack essential minerals for the human body.”
Furthermore, she points out that sodas contain chemicals such as sacralose, aspartame, and saccharin, which can cause irritation in the body. “This poses a significant risk to human health,” she states.
When discussing which groups are most affected by soda consumption, Dr. Ouma highlights that children, teenagers, the elderly, and pregnant women are especially vulnerable.
“For pregnant women, excessive soda consumption can lead to a type of diabetes that may affect both the mother and the unborn child,” she says.
Elderly people who frequently drink soda may suffer from bone diseases and heart conditions. To reduce soda intake, Dr. Ouma advises that individuals can opt for alternatives such as juice, fermented or non-fermented milk.
“Additionally, they can begin to drink more water, soups, or herbal teas. By doing this, frequent soda drinkers can gradually reduce their craving for these drinks,” she explains.
Dr. Ouma also suggests that soda addicts should avoid attending social events where such beverages are served.
She emphasizes the importance of educating and raising awareness about the harmful effects of soda consumption. “Through education and awareness programs, individuals may eventually develop a dislike for soda and avoid its associated risks,” she concludes.
