General Muhoozi Urges Compassion for LGBTQ+ Community, Suggests Scrapping Anti-Gay Law

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has sparked debate with his remarks on the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA).

In a series of posts on X, Muhoozi suggested that the law, which has drawn global condemnation, should be repealed by 2026.

“In 2026, we shall remove this Anti-Homosexuality Act. They are sick people, but since the Creator made them...what do we do? Even kiboko might not work. We shall pray for them,” Muhoozi stated.

The AHA, signed into law in May 2023, imposes harsh penalties, including the death sentence for aggravated homosexuality, and has been widely criticized by human rights organizations and foreign governments.

Muhoozi shared his experience during a recent visit to Japan, where he said he was confronted by locals about Uganda's stance on homosexuality.

“I was in Japan recently and people asked me why we are persecuting homosexuals? I was totally shocked and very hurt. Japanese are warriors like us. I respect them very much. I asked them how we are oppressing them? Then they told me about the AHA,” he explained.

He urged Ugandans to reconsider the law, emphasizing that it has led to misunderstandings with international partners.

“Compatriots, let’s get rid of that small law. Our friends around the world are misunderstanding us,” he added.
