Mixed Reactions as General Muhoozi Targets Kampala’s Roads in Fiery Post: Why He Wants UPDF Involved
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda's Chief of Defense Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, has sparked widespread discussion with his recent remarks about Kampala’s deteriorating road network.
Taking to social media on Sunday, General Kainerugaba expressed his frustration with the state of the city's infrastructure.
In a strongly worded tweet, he said, "We are sorting out UPDF. Soon it will be amongst the best on earth. My biggest problem now is the crumbling road infrastructure in Kampala. If things are not sorted out quickly, I will ask Mzee to put the whole of Kampala under UPDF!"
The statement has left many Ugandans divided, with some interpreting it as a bold approach to tackling the city’s long-standing road issues, while others see it as an unusual step for a military leader. Being the son of the president, General Kainerugaba's comments are seen as influential and indicative of his growing involvement in matters beyond defense.
For years, Kampala's road infrastructure has struggled to keep up with the city's rapid population growth and urbanization. Many residents have continuously voiced their frustrations over potholes and traffic congestion, which disrupt daily life and affect economic activities.
General Kainerugaba, who has been focused on transforming the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) into "one of the best on earth," appears to be extending his vision to national development. His suggestion to involve the UPDF in resolving Kampala’s road challenges has raised eyebrows, with some wondering how practical or necessary such an approach would be.
