Luzira Prison Changes Tune on Allowing Besigye Eat Food from His Allies, Issues New Conditions

Dr. Kizza Besigye’s ongoing hunger strike has reignited debates over food access policies in Uganda’s prisons, particularly Luzira Maximum Security Prison, where he is currently detained.

The prison authorities have clarified their stance on external food provision, asserting that only items meeting specific standards will be permitted within the facility.

“This is not a buyer-seller market where visitors dictate the terms,” an official stated.

“All items must meet the prescribed conditions to be allowed inside the prison.” he added.

This policy, they argue, is necessary to maintain order, ensure security, and protect the well-being of inmates.

Besigye, a veteran opposition figure and four-time presidential candidate, initiated the hunger strike to protest what he described as a denial of his basic rights, including access to preferred food.

His allies, including close family and political supporters, have attempted to bring him meals, claiming that prison food does not meet his dietary requirements. The prison administration, however, maintains that all inmates are treated equally.

“We cannot create exceptions for one individual. The rules governing food access and inspections are applied uniformly to ensure fairness and safety,” the official added.

Human rights groups have expressed concern over the handling of Besigye’s situation, urging authorities to address his grievances and avoid exacerbating tensions.

Opposition argue that denying external food, especially to a high-profile political prisoner, risks drawing international scrutiny to Uganda’s correctional system.

The hunger strike has sparked a wider conversation about the rights of prisoners, with many calling for reforms to prison policies on external support.

Meanwhile, Besigye’s camp insists that the government’s hardline approach reflects an attempt to suppress dissent.
