How Former Uganda Police Chief Bounced Back With Top Job After Months in the Cold
He is one of the most respected security leaders in Uganda, whose career resurgence demonstrates the value of experience in public service.
Abbas Byakagaba, former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP), was appointed as Uganda’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) by President Yoweri Museveni on May 17, 2024.
Though he had retired from the police force after decades of service, Byakagaba's reappointment to this critical role showed that his expertise in security management was still in high demand.
Byakagaba had previously served in key roles, including Director of Counter-Terrorism, Regional Police Commander, and Director of Operations. His extensive knowledge of Uganda’s security landscape positioned him as the ideal choice to lead the police force during a period of evolving threats.
Since assuming the role, Byakagaba has introduced transformative changes. He reorganized the leadership structure by making critical senior appointments and transfers to enhance efficiency within the force.
Under his tenure, counter-terrorism efforts have intensified, with specialized units receiving advanced training to address emerging threats.
Additionally, Byakagaba has emphasized community policing, fostering trust between law enforcement and the public.
His leadership has been instrumental in addressing rising crime rates in urban areas, particularly in Kampala, through improved patrols and deployment of surveillance technology.
As of January 2025, Byakagaba continues to steer the Uganda Police Force toward modernization, proving that seasoned leadership is essential for maintaining stability and security in the country.
