UNEB Introduces New Grading System, Check How It Works & How Students Performed

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has officially released the 2024 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results, marking the first cohort of candidates assessed under the new competency-based curriculum.
This curriculum, introduced in 2020, required significant assessment reforms, including continuous assessment and project work in addition to the end-of-cycle examination.
UNEB Executive Director Dan Odong announced a new grading system where performance is reported by letter grades A, B, C, D, and E, replacing the previous division ranking system.
He explained that student assessment was based on a combination of 20% continuous assessment and 80% end-of-cycle examination.
To facilitate this transition, UNEB trained 63,041 teachers on digital assessment tools and developed an in-house software called the Assessment Management Information System (ARMIS).
The meaning of each letter grade was also clarified. Grade A signifies exceptional competency, where a learner applies knowledge innovatively in real-life situations.
Grade B indicates outstanding competency, Grade C represents satisfactory competency, and Grade D reflects a basic level of competency. Grade E is the lowest, showing below-basic competency.
To qualify for the Uganda Certificate of Education, a candidate must achieve at least a Grade D in one subject. Candidates typically sit for eight or nine subjects.
The 2024 results indicate that 98.5% of candidates (350,146 students) qualified for the certificate, with "Result One" indicated on their transcripts. Those who did not meet the requirements will have "Result Two" on their transcripts.
This new grading system is a major shift in Uganda’s education system, focusing on competency-based learning and ensuring that students acquire practical skills applicable in real-life situations.
