The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has accused security forces of undermining its chances in the upcoming Kawempe North by-election, with NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi alleging that police actions have benefited the opposition.

Odoi, while expressing confidence in the party’s chances, claimed that law enforcement’s handling of events in Kawempe worked against NRM’s candidate.

“I watched the scenes in Kawempe and I told my friends that I think the police were campaigning for the opposition. I think the police on that day went to Kawempe to decampaign our NRM candidate,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing criticism of security forces over alleged violence and intimidation during the nomination process.

Several opposition figures, including Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, have condemned what they describe as excessive force used by security operatives, particularly the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT), whose presence in the area has sparked concern.

The by-election, set for March 13, 2025, was triggered by the passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. NRM’s candidate, Faridah Nambi, has been actively campaigning, urging supporters to remain steadfast despite the challenges.

Odoi’s comments highlight growing tensions as the race intensifies, with both sides expressing concerns over the electoral environment.

As election day nears, all eyes remain on how security forces will handle the process to ensure a free and fair contest.
