Why Ugandan Army Have Been Warned To Stay Out of Politics Ahead of 2026 Elections

A senior military officer in Uganda has warned the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to stay neutral in political matters as the country moves closer to the 2026 general elections.

Maj. Gen. Felix Busizoori, the Commander of the 4th Infantry Division, emphasized that the army must remain professional and avoid getting involved in political disputes.

His statement comes at a time when political activity in Uganda is increasing, with both opposition leaders and ruling party officials preparing for the elections.

Speaking to a group of officers during a briefing session, Maj. Gen. Busizoori reminded them of their duty to serve the country without favoring any political side.

"The role of the UPDF is to protect the country and its people.

We are not supposed to take sides in political matters. Our job is to ensure peace and stability, not to interfere with elections," he said.

His remarks come amid growing concerns that security forces in Uganda have, in the past, been accused of taking sides during elections.

Opposition leaders have often complained that the military and police are used to intimidate them or interfere with their campaigns.

With the 2026 elections drawing closer, political temperatures in Uganda are rising.

Various politicians are already mobilizing their supporters, and tensions are building between the ruling party and the opposition.

Opposition leaders have welcomed Maj. Gen. Busizoori’s statement but remain cautious.

Some politicians argue that security agencies have a history of interfering in elections and question whether the UPDF will truly remain neutral this time.

"It is good to hear such statements, but we need to see action.

The military and police must respect the will of the people," said an opposition politician who preferred to remain anonymous.

Another political analyst noted that Uganda has seen several elections where security forces played a major role in controlling protests and arresting opposition figures.

The Ugandan government has repeatedly defended the role of security forces during elections, insisting that their presence is meant to ensure peace and prevent violence.

However, critics argue that excessive force has been used against opposition supporters in previous elections.
