UPDF Responds to Claims of Using Chemical Weapons in South Sudan

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has dismissed reports circulating on social media that claim the Ugandan Air Force used chemical and barrel bombs on rebel positions in South Sudan.
In an official statement, UPDF clarified that these allegations are completely false. They stated that Uganda’s military does not possess chemical weapons or barrel bombs and does not operate any systems designed to deliver such weapons.
The rumors suggest that UPDF targeted rebel forces known as the White Army in Upper Nile and Jonglei states. However, the military firmly denied these accusations, explaining that they take great care to avoid attacking civilians or civilian structures.
According to the statement, UPDF only uses precision strikes to hit military targets, ensuring minimal damage to non-combatants.
The army further noted that these claims are part of a propaganda campaign aimed at discrediting Uganda’s involvement in South Sudan.
They pointed fingers at Dr. Riek Machar, South Sudan’s opposition leader, and his allies, accusing them of spreading falsehoods to undermine the mission.
UPDF emphasized that its presence in South Sudan is fully authorized by the South Sudanese government. The deployment aims to help maintain stability and protect key areas, as Uganda has longstanding security ties with its neighbor.
The statement urged the public to ignore misleading reports and avoid falling for misinformation. As tensions in South Sudan continue, UPDF reassured both Ugandans and South Sudanese citizens that their mission remains focused on supporting peace and security.
