I Will Fight it With All My Strength - Israel Prime Minister Vows to Reject US Sanctions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that he would vehemently resist any action done against the nation's military forces in response to reports that the US intended to cut money to a specific unit in the Nigerian Tribune.
“I will fight it with all my strength. If anyone thinks they can impose sanctions on a unit of the IDF, I will fight it,” Netanyahu stated.
The Israeli battalion Netzah Yehuda, which is charged with violating human rights in the occupied West Bank, is thought to be the target of funding loss. Last Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted at forthcoming actions.
“I’ve made determinations; you can expect to see them in the days ahead," he stated.
Washington, Israel's main ally, has never stopped providing help to an IDF unit. In defense of its position, the Israeli military has stated that Netzah Yehuda complies with all relevant international regulations. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant urged the US to rescind its proposed penalties in a statement that emphasized how critical it is to mend US-Israel relations.
“Any attempt to criticise an entire unit casts a heavy shadow on the actions of the IDF,” Gallant's statement conveyed.
Refusing to support an Israeli Defense Forces unit would be compliant with the "Leahy Law," which was passed in 1997 and forbids the United States from endorsing foreign armed forces that are linked to serious human rights abuses.
Established in 1999, Netzah Yehuda is exclusive to ultra-Orthodox Jews. There are just men in the unit.
This restriction could be imposed in response to the US's recent action against Israeli far-right activist Ben Zion Gopstein, whose organization, Lehava, was accused of "destabilizing violence affecting the West Bank."
