Pope’s Representative in Uganda Announces the Passing of a Prince of the Catholic Church

The Papal Nuncio to Uganda, Archbishop Luigi Bianco, has officially communicated the death of a prince of the Catholic Church to the Archbishop of Kampala, Paul Ssemwogerere, and to the entire Catholic community in Uganda.
In a solemn message, the nuncio relayed that Pope Francis, at exactly 1:30am Rome time, mourned the passing of one of the Church’s most revered leaders.
The message was delivered during a special announcement by Fr Joseph Mukiibi, head of communications in the Kampala Archdiocese, who had been delegated by Archbishop Ssemwogerere to read the statement.
Father Mukiibi also conveyed the Archbishop’s own reflections, expressing both grief and gratitude for the departed Church figure’s life of extraordinary service.
Archbishop Ssemogerere described the moment as one of profound prayer and thanksgiving within the Church, noting that the late prelate’s dedication to faith and humanity left an indelible mark.
He urged Catholics to reflect deeply on his legacy and strive to live out the virtues he exemplified.
“We are in prayer, honouring the life of a man who gave so much to God and to the world. His spiritual leadership and commitment will be sorely missed,” said Archbishop Ssemogerere in his written message.
In line with Catholic tradition, ceremonial protocols have been established to guide the period of mourning.
Fr Mukiibi urged all faithful to engage fully in the final rites and open their hearts in prayer as the Church bids farewell to a beloved spiritual father.
While the Vatican has yet to release further details, the announcement has stirred a wave of reflection and sorrow across Uganda’s Catholic community.
