Museveni Pledges Shs300m for School and Mosque in Honour of Mufti Zubair Kayongo

President Museveni has pledged to fund the construction and renovation of a school and mosque in memory of the former Supreme Mufti Shaikh Zubair Kayongo.

The initiative, aimed at honouring the legacy of one of Uganda’s most influential Muslim leaders, was announced during a memorial event in Buswabulongo, Lwamata Town Council, Kiboga District.

Speaking on behalf of the President, aspiring Kiboga Woman MP Desire Muhooza revealed that Shs300 million has been allocated for the project.

She described the gesture as a recognition of Mufti Kayongo’s lifelong commitment to fostering unity and development within the Muslim community.

“President Museveni understands the significance of Mufti Zubair Kayongo’s work. This school and mosque will stand as a testament to his dedication and the values he instilled in our community,” Muhooza said.

Mufti Kayongo, remembered for his bridge-building efforts among diverse Islamic groups, commanded deep respect across religious and political divides.

His leadership was marked by a consistent call for peace, cooperation, and the upliftment of the Muslim faithful.

His death in 2015 left a significant void in the religious landscape of Uganda.

The school and mosque, once complete, will serve not only as a tribute to his legacy but also as a hub for education and worship, especially for Muslim children in the region.

The 10th annual Dua in memory of the late Mufti drew numerous dignitaries, including Supreme Mufti Sheikh Shabban Mohammad Galabuzi, who led the prayers.

He praised the initiative and urged the community to uphold the values of unity and service that defined Kayongo’s life.

Also in attendance was the Iranian Ambassador to Uganda, Shaikh Majid Safar, who commended the project and pledged continued cooperation with the Ugandan government.

“We remain committed to supporting Uganda’s development, particularly in sectors like agriculture, which directly impact communities,” he said.

The mood in Buswabulongo was one of gratitude and renewed hope as the community welcomed the President’s gesture as a long-overdue honor for a leader who gave his all for unity and progress.
