President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has publicly praised the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) for their successful joint military operation with the South Sudan Army, which resulted in the recapture of the strategic town of Nassir from armed militias.

The operation was aimed at neutralizing insurgents who had taken control of the town and were reportedly planning further territorial advances in South Sudan.

Using his official X (formerly Twitter) account, President Museveni announced the victory, stating that the UPDF’s expeditionary force worked hand-in-hand with the South Sudanese military to swiftly defeat the insurgents.

He highlighted the strategic importance of Nassir, warning that the militias intended to use it as a launching point to seize more towns in the region.

Museveni went on to applaud Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for leading a revitalization of the UPDF’s combat strength.

“I congratulate the CDF and the entire UPDF for restoring the force’s lethality in combat and addressing internal challenges such as corruption,” the President said.

This operation underscores the growing military cooperation between Uganda and South Sudan, especially in areas threatened by instability.

Both countries have been working closely to address security threats posed by insurgent groups operating near their borders. Nassir, being a strategic location, had become a flashpoint in recent weeks, prompting urgent military intervention.

General Muhoozi, who has recently been at the center of military reforms in Uganda, has prioritized modernizing the UPDF and increasing its operational effectiveness. Under his leadership, the army has increased regional engagements and peacekeeping efforts, reinforcing Uganda’s role as a stabilizing force in East Africa.

While the news of the successful operation brought a sense of pride and relief to many, other domestic matters continue to draw attention. In a separate development, the wife of Eddie Mutwe, the personal bodyguard to opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has spoken out.

She is calling for the immediate release of her husband, who was allegedly abducted in Mukono District. According to her statement, Mutwe has not been formally charged or presented in court, and she is urging President Museveni’s government to follow due process and respect human rights.

The alleged abduction of Eddie Mutwe is likely to fuel further debate on the state of political freedoms in Uganda, especially regarding the treatment of opposition members and their supporters.

Activists and human rights organizations have consistently raised concerns about arbitrary arrests and the suppression of political dissent in the country.

As Uganda navigates both regional security challenges and internal political tensions, these recent developments highlight the dual focus of the Museveni administration—strengthening national defense while responding to domestic calls for justice and accountability.
