Nairobi woke up to a city under lockdown on Monday, July 7, as Kenyan security forces moved swiftly to block access to the Central Business District in anticipation of the annual Saba Saba protests.

Barricades were erected along major roads including Thika Road, Mombasa Road, and Ngong Road, effectively halting commuter traffic by dawn.

The heightened police presence follows rising tension nationwide, with reports of youth being blocked from entering the capital and Kenya Railways abruptly canceling its overnight Mombasa-Nairobi train.

Authorities claimed the train had developed a technical fault, but passengers suspect political motives.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen urged police to act with restraint, while emphasizing the need to confront criminals hiding behind peaceful protests. Several schools and businesses preemptively shut their doors, fearing possible violence.

Saba Saba, observed annually since 1990, commemorates Kenya’s historic push for multiparty democracy. This year’s protests are expected to draw a large turnout, particularly among the youth.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has vowed to lead a peaceful rally at Kamukunji Grounds.
