Fifteen National Unity Platform supporters have been remanded to Luzira Prison until July twenty nine. The group was arrested from various locations in Lubaga Division, including their homes, following accusations of defacing campaign posters of President Yoweri Museveni.

The arrests come days before the President is expected to visit Kampala, raising questions about the timing and motive.

Party leaders claim the charges are politically driven and meant to suppress opposition voices. They argue that the accused are being punished preemptively to prevent any potential protests or disruptions during the presidential visit.

Many NUP leaders have since gone into hiding, fearing targeted arrests by security operatives.

NUP has condemned the arrests as part of a wider pattern of political persecution. The party accuses the government of double standards, pointing out that their own campaign materials are often torn down without consequence. Supporters caught erecting NUP posters are regularly arrested or harassed.

The opposition also highlights how Museveni’s posters appear across towns before he is officially nominated.

They question the legal basis of prosecuting individuals for defacing materials of a non-declared candidate. This raises further concerns about fairness in the political environment.

Reports from upcountry districts suggest that NUP posters are being removed in areas such as Kamwenge and Mbarara.

Some supporters have spent nights in police custody simply for attempting to raise party visibility. The trend has sparked outrage among opposition supporters.

NUP insists that such intimidation will not stop their struggle. They urge the public to remain vigilant and committed to demanding justice, transparency and equal participation in the political process
