Makerere Boss Wants Hostels Turned into Holiday Airbnbs to Boost University Income

Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has proposed a creative idea to boost the institution's revenue—renting out university hostels during holidays. According to him, this approach would not only bring in extra income but also make good use of the hostels when students are away.

He explained that some of the newly constructed hostel buildings are of very high quality, even better than many hotels around Kampala. With modern amenities and improved comfort, these facilities can serve as short-term accommodation for both local and international visitors.

Prof. Nawangwe further noted that the university could adopt the Airbnb model, allowing guests to stay temporarily before the academic calendar resumes. This, he believes, would position Makerere as both an educational and business-minded institution, especially at a time when universities across the country are looking for alternative sources of income.

Many Ugandans and visitors from abroad constantly search for affordable, clean, and secure places to stay. If Makerere implements this idea properly, it could attract NGOs, researchers, or even tourists looking for safe and convenient accommodation in the city.

This suggestion comes as part of broader reforms to modernize the university’s infrastructure and ensure financial sustainability without overburdening students with increased tuition fees. If approved, the initiative could be a game-changer for other public universities in Uganda
