Traffic Changes Announced for CHAN 2025 in Kampala and Entebbe

With Uganda set to host matches for the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025), the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has announced a comprehensive traffic management plan that will temporarily affect movement in and around Kampala and Entebbe.
The changes, which take effect during the tournament period, are aimed at ensuring the safe and smooth transit of players, officials, and international guests.
Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura said the adjustments are necessary to avoid congestion and ensure the efficient movement of CHAN convoys.
“The African Nations Championship is a continental event of high significance. As hosts, we must guarantee the security and comfort of all participants. This requires some changes in how traffic flows around key areas,” Kananura said.
The affected areas include major routes, accommodation facilities, training grounds, and match venues. Among the key roads to be closely managed is the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway, Northern Bypass, and Bwaise Interchange.
Other heavily monitored routes include access roads to Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, Wankulukuku Stadium, Kadiba Stadium in Mengo, and Kyambogo University Playground.
In the case of Mandela National Stadium, which will host Uganda’s group games, diversions will be activated on match days from midday onward.

“Diversions will only be made when necessary, particularly during ongoing matches,” Kananura explained.
“We appeal to all road users to cooperate with officers and follow instructions carefully.”
Trucks will be diverted away from central areas, rerouted via Gayaza, Kalagi, and Mukono. Light vehicles, especially those headed toward Naalya, Kyaliwajjala, and Bweyogerere, may also be rerouted depending on match activity.
Access to Kireka Trading Centre will be cut off from Kinawataka Road, with pedestrians being the only group allowed to pass through some of the closed areas such as Kireka–Nasanga Junction.
Parking at Mandela Stadium’s Southern Playground Wing will be strictly limited to vehicles with VIP accreditation.
“We urge the public not to bring vehicles to the venue. If you do not have a VIP sticker, you will be denied entry. Please arrange alternative parking away from the stadium,” Kananura emphasized.
The Traffic Police will deploy heavily along all designated routes, and lead vehicles will accompany CHAN convoys. Officers will be on hand to manage diversions and ensure public safety.
“This is a time for national pride,” Kananura added. “We therefore call on all Ugandans to exercise patience, plan their journeys early, and most importantly, follow the guidance of traffic officers. With your cooperation, Uganda can successfully host this major sporting event without incident.”
