Kaziimba Honours Rev Ndyabahika’s Legacy At Memorial Service

The Archbishop Of The Church Of Uganda, The Most Rev Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, on Monday led a memorial service at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Rugarama in Kabale town in honour of the late Rev. Canon Prof. James Francis Ndyabahika.

Ndyabahika passed away on May 23, 2015, in Mutare, Zimbabwe, at the age of 72.

Speaking during the service, Kaziimba described Ndyabahika as a humble and generous servant of God who lived faithfully who embodied the Church’s mission of service and scholarship.

“Rev. Canon Prof. Ndyabahika was a Canon of the Church of Uganda and a Professor of Church History who traveled worldwide in pursuit of learning and ministry. His life is a testimony that when we serve the Lord with humility, the impact goes far beyond borders,” Kaziimba told the congregation.

Born in Kabale, Western Uganda, Ndyabahika served at various positions within the Church of Uganda including the Diocesan Treasurer of The Diocese Of Kigezi, Associate Coordinator of the Department of Rehabilitation and Development, Internal Auditor at the Church headquarters in Kampala, and the General Secretary of Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC).

He was also instrumental in the transformation of Bishop Barham Divinity College, Kabale to Uganda Christian University where he once served as Principal (Dean).

In his later years, Ndyabahika chose to focus on academia lecturing at Makerere University and later Africa University in Mutare, Zimbabwe where he taught African Church History, African Initiated Churches (AlCs) and Christian Ethics.

He also specialised in contemporary African Church History, Themes in Modern African Church History, Issues in contemporary African Initiated Churches and the impact of colonial Christianity in Africa.

Ndyabahika is survived by a widow, Rev. Canon Grace Nyonyozi Ndyabahika, and three children including Ruth Ndyabahika, Founder of Grace Villas and Apollo Ndyabahika, Managing Partner at Africa Maven Group.

Kaziimba commended the family of the deceased for their steadfastness in faithfully upholding the values for which Ndyabahika stood for.

During the same event, Kaziimba opened the Kigezi Church History Trail, an Art Gallery created in Ndyabahika’s honour that tells the story of the growth of Christianity in Kigezi.

The memorial was attended by the Bishop of Kigezi, Gaddie Akanjuna; Bishop of North-West Ankole, Amos Magezi, Retired Bishop of Northern Uganda, Johnson Gakumba; Chancellor Of Makerere University, Ezra Suruma; amongst several political, local, and religious leaders.
