Minister of State for Mineral Development, Hon Phiona Nyamutoro is slated to hold a thanksgiving ceremony for her appointment in cabinet.

The celebration is scheduled for next month on August 3 in her home district of Nebbi.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected as the chief guest.

The minister announced Thanksgiving last night during a social media livestream to mark her first 100 days in office.

The Thanksgiving evening, the minister said, will be marked with a major milestone as Nebbi and the rest of the West Nile sub-region will be connected for the first time to the national power grid.

President Museveni will officially commission the Lira-Kole-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua powerline at the Nebbi substation.

The 132-kilo Volt power line was constructed with funding from the International Development Association. Construction of the line started in 2020.

It was not supposed to be launched until early next year.

However, when Nyamutoro came into office in March this year, she demanded fast-tracking of this project.

I told the (ministry officials) that I was not going to have my thanksgiving until this was achieved,” the minister recounted.

They said they needed time to finish the work, and I told them to let me know when they would be done.”

In the end, the work that was supposed to be done in one year, she said, was compressed into three months.

"I am very pleased because as a leader, there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing that you directly impact your people,” she added
