The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has deepened its political dominance in Apac after absorbing a fresh wave of defectors from the Uganda Peoples’ Congress (UPC), turning campaign rallies in Chegere Sub-county into a charged arena of celebration and sharp accusations of corruption.

During campaign meetings in Adir, Kidilani and Adem on Monday, NRM district chairperson Talib Okabo led the welcoming of the new defectors, saying their shift proved that the ruling party “remains the only political organisation with a clear and national agenda.”

However, the rallies quickly intensified when NRM leaders openly accused Apac district and municipal authorities of grossly mismanaging public funds meant for road maintenance.

Apac Woman MP Betty Engola told residents that Parliament allocates approximately Shs2 billion every year for road construction and rehabilitation in Apac. She alleged that once the money reaches district accounts, portions are diverted for personal benefit by some leaders.

“Parliament does its job. But when the money gets here, it is mismanaged by certain leaders. This is why roads remain impassable,” Engola said, prompting murmurs of frustration from residents.

Mr Okabo echoed the accusations, describing the alleged diversion of funds as “a grand betrayal of public trust” and urging voters to reject leaders responsible for poor accountability.

Engola also used the gatherings to portray NRM as Uganda’s long-term political compass, noting that the party has a development roadmap stretching to 2060. She highlighted commitments under the 2026 Manifesto, including plans to boost local manufacturing, expand rural electrification, revive railway transport, strengthen environmental protection efforts and promote tourism sites such as Tyen Olum in Ibuje Sub-county and the Barlonyo Memorial Site in Lira District.

“These are not mere promises but structured plans that will define Uganda’s next 20 to 30 years,” she said.

On community empowerment, Engola pledged continued support for small household enterprises, including supplying groundnut, millet and simsim processing equipment to help vulnerable families increase income.

At the same rally, NRM Maruzi North flag bearer Benard Otim Odoc warned residents against what he termed an incoming wave of propaganda from opposition groups ahead of the 2026 elections.

“Do not be deceived by political merchants. They are coming with fabricated stories meant to confuse you,” he cautioned.

The rallies also featured the public reception of multiple UPC defectors joining NRM, with Okabo declaring that Apac is “returning to a politics of realism and development focus.”
