Uganda schools reopening delayed to for safety during elections, new date announced
The Ministry of Education and Sports has pushed the date for schools reopening for the first term of 2026 further to the second week of February.
Initially, the official Uganda schools calendar for 2026, released by the Ministry of Education, required schools to reopen for the first term on February 2.

The date has, however, been postponed to 10th February 2026, and this affects all educational institutions nationwide, including government and private schools, international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities.
According to the ministry, the delay is intended to ensure the safety of students amid the ongoing general election process.
“The ministry hereby informs you that due to the general elections and to ensure safety of all learners, all schools and education institutions across the country are directed to reopen on Tuesday, 10th, 2026,” reads part of a circular signed by Permanent Secretary Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda.
Uganda went to the ballot on 15th January 2026, and vote counting is currently ongoing with the results expected to be declared in the next few days.
