NRM MP Loser in Kalungu Calls on Gen. Muhoozi to Intervene Over Minister Sekindi’s Alleged Support for Opposition
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Kalungu District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Helen Nakeeya, has appealed to Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba to intervene in escalating political tensions in the district following the recently concluded elections.
Addressing journalists, Nakeeya accused her political rival, Hon. Aisha Ssekindi, who contested for the same seat as an independent candidate, of allegedly undermining NRM candidates in Kalungu and fueling divisions within the party ranks.
Nakeeya claimed that some youth leaders aligned to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a civic platform associated with Gen. Muhoozi, were allegedly influenced to support opposition-leaning candidates during the election period. She further alleged that two NRM supporters lost their lives in election-related violence and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
The deceased were identified as Frank Mbigo and Gerald Katumba. Nakeeya described them as committed party mobilizers and called for justice for their families, noting that one of the deceased left behind a pregnant wife facing financial hardship.
“We must clean up our party and address the divisions that are costing us politically,” Nakeeya said, adding that internal disagreements contributed to the poor performance of NRM flag bearers in Kalungu District.
She also appealed to State Minister for Microfinance Hon. Haruna Kasolo to join Gen. Muhoozi in addressing what she termed as leadership and security concerns in the district.
Kalungu’s political landscape has been marked by rivalry among senior figures, including former minister Vincent Ssempijja, who reportedly lost the Kalungu East Constituency race and is said to be exploring legal options over alleged electoral irregularities.
In response, Hon. Aisha Ssekindi dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated. She said her decision to run as an independent candidate stemmed from internal disagreements within the NRM over party flag endorsements.
Ssekindi maintained that although she did not secure the NRM flag, she remains a supporter of President Yoweri Museveni and the broader principles of the party.
“I have not been involved in any acts of violence, and I strongly reject claims linking me to the deaths of two people. These accusations are politically driven,” Ssekindi said.
She added that political competition in Kalungu should not be turned into personal attacks and called for calm as any electoral disputes are handled through the courts.
Authorities had not issued an official statement on the allegations by press time. Political observers note that the dispute reflects deeper factional tensions within Kalungu’s NRM structures as post-election processes unfold.
