Incarcerated National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president in charge of Buganda Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi wants the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Lino Anguzu to speed up his criminal trial on charges related to terrorism
In a conversation with friends who included veteran journalists Peter Kibazo and Haruna Kanabi who visited him at Kitalya government prison, Kivumbi said that his political opponents miscalculated by imprisoning him and slapping him with politically motivated criminal charges.
Kivumb argued that he will not be broken and boasted that he is still focused on fighting for a regime change in the country
“Our friend Muwanga Kivumbi told us to deliver a promising and encouraging message to his supporters that he is still strong, focused and currently concentrating on asking for a speedy trial. He wants to know why his innocent supporters were killed at his home,” Kanabi said on Radio Simba’s Gasimbaganne ne bannamawulire talk show.
Before his arrest, Kivumbi narrated that on voting day, his agents and supporters gathered at his home because it is where he had put his tallying centre and when security raided his home, the results from the tallying already showed that he was leading.
He divulged that security officers raided his home and started shooting randomly at them while asking where Kivumbi was hiding.
After the shooting, the, dead bodies were collected by the army and taken away as the injured struggled to survive.
Kivumbi and other accused persons who are facing terrorism charges are expected back at Butambala Chief Magistrate Court to understand the status of the investigations.
Their arrested resulted from statements made by President Museveni after his 2026 presidential victory where he disclosed that the operation that led to the death of more than seven people Kivumbi’s home was an intelligence led operation after they got information that they were planning to disrupt vote counting at the district tally centres not only in Butambala but also countrywide.
Museveni was supported by Butambala Member of Parliament elect Erias Mukiibi who said that Kivumbi deserves what he is going through. Mukiibi said that Kivumbi was very violent during the campaigns to the extent that he hired goons who were moving in a Toyota Hiace van commonly known as ‘drone’ to terrorise people who do not support him.
Because of the sensitivity of the matter, Kivumbi’s file was assigned to senior prosecutor Racheal Bikhole to lead the prosecution team.
Bikhole was among the prosecution team that prosecuted Muslim Tabliq leaders led by Sheikh Yunus Kamoga who were convicted at the Crimes War Division of the High Court only to be exonerated by Court of Appeal which put a side both the conviction and the sentence.
Kivumbi also hired a team of experienced lawyers led by Kampala city Lord Mayor Ssalongo Erias Lukwago, his wife Dr Zahara Nampeewo Kivumbi, Medard Lubega Ssegona and Samuel Muyizi to defend him and the other co-accused.
Most of Kivumbi’s co-accused are school going children and lawyers have pleaded to the trial magistrate to release them on bail so that they go back to school as investigations into the crimes against them proceed.
They were however advised to make such a prayer at the High Court which has such powers.
