SOROTI CITY: Angry Mob Kills Suspected Cattle Thief, Set His Motorcycle Ablaze
Police from the East Kyoga Region began an investigation into a case of murder resulting from mob action in Ajumula Cell, Agama Ward, West Division, Soroti City.
According to reports, a resident’s bull was stolen that night of April 4th 2026, leading community members to initiate a search for the thief.
During their search, they discovered a man at the site where the bull had been slaughtered; he had a motorcycle as well as what appeared to be animal remains.
ACP Ibrahim Saiga, the East Kyoga Regional Police commander, confirmed on Sunday, April 5, 2026, that the man was attacked by a mob, which led to his death. The motorcycle was subsequently set on fire.
When police arrived at the scene, they found that the victim had already succumbed to his injuries. The body has since been taken to Soroti City Mortuary for a postmortem examination, and the charred motorcycle has been recovered.
Saiga stated that investigations are underway to identify and bring to justice all those involved in this act of mob violence. The Police Force has condemned mob justice, urging the public to hand over suspects to authorities for proper legal processing.
“Taking the law into one’s own hands undermines justice and can lead to the tragic loss of innocent lives,” he emphasized.
Authorities are calling on anyone with information that could aid in the ongoing investigations to report it to their nearest police station.
According to the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025, 950 cases of murder by mob action were reported, representing a 6.5% decrease from 1,016 cases in 2024.
Victims were primarily suspected of theft, robbery, and burglary, with the highest incidents reported in North Kyoga (73) and KMP East (71).
The report highlights that community members continue to take the law into their own hands, targeting individuals suspected of crimes.
