Kabale–Mparo Road Deterioration Disrupts Transport and Trade
Road users along the Kabale–Mparo road in Kabale District have raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of the road, saying it is negatively affecting their businesses and the transportation of agricultural produce.
The road, which connects Kabale District to Rukiga District through Rukyiri, is reportedly in a critical state, with several sections becoming nearly impassable, especially during the rainy season.
Speaking to our reporter, several residents expressed frustration over the poor condition of the road. Stephen Twinamasiko, a boda boda rider, together with Emmanuel Rwankyenga, a resident of Butobere Ward, Brair Ankunda from Nyakagyera, and Brian Namanya, a businessman operating in Nyabushabi Trading Centre, said the situation has worsened over time.
They explained that the road is riddled with potholes, muddy patches, and eroded sections, which have led to frequent accidents involving both motorists and pedestrians. According to them, the road becomes even more dangerous during the rainy season when it deteriorates further, making it difficult for vehicles to pass.
As a result, road users are often forced to use an alternative steep route that passes near Kigezi College Butobere gate. However, they noted that this route is also challenging and unsafe, especially for motorcycles and heavy vehicles.
The residents further revealed that the road has remained in poor condition for a long time despite repeated complaints. They claim that local leaders have occasionally attempted to carry out minor repairs using limited resources, but these efforts have not provided a lasting solution due to delays in government intervention.
They also pointed out that government officials in Rukiga District frequently use the same road to access the district headquarters, yet little has been done to address its condition.
The affected community members are now calling upon the government to urgently intervene and rehabilitate the road before more lives are lost due to accidents caused by its poor state.
In response to these concerns, Eng. Alison Abenabo Twine, the Station Manager for the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) in Kabale, acknowledged the poor condition of the road and assured the public that action will be taken.
He stated that plans to work on the road are already underway and that a technical team has visited the site to assess the situation. He added that rehabilitation works are expected to commence in the coming government quarter.
