Police have arrested six Subaru drivers accused of dangerous street racing and reckless driving along the Masaka Highway, as authorities intensify efforts to curb rising road crashes across the country.

Police have arrested six drivers accused of reckless driving and engaging in dangerous road competitions along the Masaka Highway, amid growing concern over road safety on major highways.

According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, the suspects were intercepted at the Kadugala checkpoint following reports from road users about a convoy of Subaru vehicles driving dangerously along the highway.

“Masaka CPS is holding 6 drivers of different Subaru vehicles over cases of reckless driving along the Masaka Highway at Kingo & Kadugala,” Kananura said.

He added that the suspects were tracked using CCTV footage captured at Kyabakuza, Kijabwemi Roundabout, Nsenene Stage, and the Masaka Welcome Roundabout.

“The drivers were reported by concerned road users and later identified through CCTV footage… they were allegedly seen overtaking dangerously and competing against one another on the road, exposing other motorists to potential crashes,” he said.

The impounded vehicles include registration numbers UBJ 957P, UBC 788C, UBG 436V, UAO 37DV, UBN 085D, and UBL 848N.

Police said the suspects are currently detained pending court proceedings and investigations.

“The suspects were later intercepted at the Kadugala checkpoint and are currently detained pending court proceedings,” Kananura noted.

He urged motorists to exercise discipline and observe road safety regulations to prevent loss of life.

“Motorists are urged to observe responsible driving to protect lives and promote road safety,” he said.

The arrests come at a time when Uganda is grappling with a rising number of road accidents, particularly along major highways.

According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime and Traffic Safety Report for 2025 released in March 2026, the country recorded 26,044 road crashes in 2025, up from 25,107 in 2024, representing a 3.7 percent increase.

The report also showed that 5,383 people died in road crashes last year, averaging about 15 deaths per day, while 13,563 serious crashes and 7,879 minor crashes were recorded.
