Arizona Families Hold $360 Million Unspent in School Vouchers, Urging Lawmakers to Act
A new study reveals that Arizona families are sitting on a massive $360 million in unspent funds allocated for school vouchers, raising concerns among education experts. Unspent Funds Accumulate According to the Grand Canyon Institute, around 60,000 Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESAs) have unspent money, with 2,500 accounts holding between $10,000 and $50,000 untouched. The report's author, Dave Wells, emphasized that these funds are meant for educational purposes and not for accumulation. Calls for Legislative Intervention This staggering amount of unspent funds has more than doubled from the previous year, prompting calls for action from state lawmakers. Wells pointed out that diverting these resources away from education is a missed opportunity, especially considering recent budget cuts in other programs. Concerns for Students with Disabilities Critics argue that requiring families to return unspent funds could disproportionately affect students with disabilities, who often receive larger award amounts. Jenny Clark, founder of the pro-voucher group Love Your School, emphasized that these funds are crucial for students who need additional support. Debates and Recommendations Various theories exist as to why families are not utilizing their ESA funds, with suggestions for more audits and reports to ensure funds are being used appropriately. However, critics warn that imposing additional requirements could burden families. The push to reclaim unspent ESA funds underscores the need for legislative action to address the growing disparity in education funding in Arizona.
