Former Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Ruhinda North MP Thomas Tayebwa, together with the Vice National Chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Michael Nuwagira, have urged leaders in Sembabule District to avoid political conflicts and work together if the district is to benefit fully from government development programmes.

The leaders made the remarks during a thanksgiving and victory celebration organised for the newly sworn-in Lwemiyaga County MP, retired Brigadier General Emmanuel Rwashande .

Speaking at the function, Tayebwa warned that persistent political wrangles and divisions among leaders undermine service delivery and frustrate development efforts.

“Conflicts among leaders undermine development because government programmes cannot be implemented effectively in areas where leaders are constantly fighting each other,” Tayebwa said.

He called on leaders in Sembabule to put aside political differences and focus on issues that directly improve the livelihoods of citizens instead of engaging in endless political rivalry.

According to Tayebwa, Sembabule has significant potential to benefit from government programmes in sectors such as road infrastructure, agriculture, water supply, and education, but this can only be achieved through unity and cooperation among leaders.

“Sembabule can benefit greatly from government programmes, but leaders must speak with one voice and cooperate with government for the people to see real transformation,” he added.

Tayebwa further urged elected leaders to prioritise service delivery over partisan interests, noting that residents are more concerned about development than political camps.

During the event, several leaders from Sembabule pledged to work together despite the intense political competition that characterised the recent elections.

Among those who addressed the gathering was Sembabule District Chairperson aspirant Halifah Kaweesa, who called for reconciliation and collective responsibility among leaders.

Residents also used the occasion to challenge their leaders to address pressing issues affecting the district, particularly land grabbing, which they described as a major threat to ordinary citizens.

“People are suffering because of land grabbing. Leaders should first handle the problems affecting wananchi instead of concentrating on political fights,” said a resident identified as Kaddu from Lwemiyaga.

In his remarks, Emmanuel Rwashande Kyamuzigita pledged to prioritise education, healthcare, road infrastructure, and economic empowerment during his term in office.

“My focus is to transform Lwemiyaga through better schools, improved health services, better roads, and programmes that improve household incomes,” Rwashande said.

The legislator also vowed to fight corruption within government institutions in Sembabule, including alleged misconduct within some security agencies.

“Corruption has denied our people services for a long time. We are going to fight it at all levels without fear or favour,” he said.

The event attracted political leaders, residents, and supporters from different parts of Sembabule and neighbouring districts, with many expressing hope that unity among leaders would accelerate development in the area.
