Moroto, Uganda – Local government officials in Karamoja are currently facing pressure from anticorruption youth who have tasked them with printing and pinning all government and NGO fund releases for the region.
The youth have gained this authority after being trained by the Karamoja Anticorruption Coalition, with funding from the Danish Embassy and GIZ, on their role as citizens in demanding accountability for all government and non-government funds meant to support Karamoja.
Mathew Lokut, one of the youth leaders, stated that printing and pinning all government releases in local governments and sub-counties will help reduce corruption, as everyone will be able to see how much money the government and NGOs have allocated to particular offices and for specific activities.
“There’s no way we locals can tell whether the government has released money to the district and the sub-county if it’s not pinned on the notice boards for public consumption,” he said.
The Karamoja Anticorruption Coalition has been conducting mass training and sensitization meetings for local government officials, NGOs, and youth to promote the fight against corruption. Dr. Ayub Mukisa, the Executive Director of the Karamoja Anticorruption Coalition, emphasized that the fight against corruption is the responsibility of every citizen.
“Locals should take up the fight against corruption because they are the ones most affected, yet the government sends releases to support various activities,” Dr. Mukisa urged, encouraging the youth to continue their efforts against corruption.
