Anita Among: I Remain Loyal to Museveni Despite My Ordeal
The former Speaker said she remained a loyal cadre of the ruling National Resistance Movement and would continue serving wherever the President and the party deemed fit.
KAMPALA: Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has declared her continued loyalty to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, describing him as her mentor and guardian despite the political and legal challenges she is currently facing.
Speaking on Sunday while receiving a delegation of Teso cultural leaders led by Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng at her Nakasero residence, Among said she remained grateful to the President for elevating her to the country’s third highest office.
“The President gave me an opportunity to serve in one of the most important positions of my political career,” Among said as the elders nodded in agreement.
“I became a Speaker because of him. I will always remain loyal to him,” she added.
The former Speaker also dismissed reports that she had been mistreated during the investigations that have seen security agencies raid her residences and seize property.
“And contrary to media reports, I have not been treated badly,” she said.
“What you have read or heard that I was mistreated is not true at all. It’s an exaggeration.”
Among said the most difficult aspect of the ordeal had been the public humiliation arising from the investigations and the intense media scrutiny surrounding them.
She also sought to rebut some of the allegations that have circulated since investigators searched her homes in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea.
Among denied reports that security agencies had discovered sacks of cash at her residences.
“Only Shs420,000 was found,” she said.
“They said I had a money-printing machine, which was false,” she added, drawing laughter from the elders gathered at her home.
The former Speaker said she remained a loyal cadre of the ruling National Resistance Movement and would continue serving wherever the President and the party deemed fit.
“I remain a loyal cadre and I will serve wherever I am deployed,” she said.
Among’s remarks came as Teso’s cultural leaders sought to reassure her of their support amid ongoing investigations by the Inspectorate of Government and the Criminal Investigations Directorate into allegations relating to her assets and wealth declarations.
The delegation, which also discussed her health and wellbeing, pledged to engage President Museveni in search of an amicable resolution to the situation.
“If there are any mistakes, we want to go and apologise to Museveni as Iteso,” the Emorimor said.
The visit highlighted Among’s continued support within her home region despite the political turbulence that has seen her withdraw from the Speakership race and be replaced by Jacob Oboth Oboth.
For now, however, the former Speaker’s political future remains tied to the outcome of investigations that she says she is prepared to face while remaining loyal to the President who, in her words, “gave me an opportunity to serve.”
