The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has conducted a road safety awareness and sensitisation campaign targeting taxi drivers, truck drivers, boda boda riders, driving school proprietors and other road safety stakeholders from Kiira, Bweyogerere, Namugongo and Kireka divisions.
The engagement, held at Hotel Mamerito, brought together road users and Uganda Police officers to discuss key challenges affecting safety on the roads and identify practical measures to prevent crashes.
The campaign featured interactive question-and-answer sessions, giving participants an opportunity to raise concerns about road safety, traffic regulations and the conduct of drivers and riders while using public roads.
As part of the sensitisation drive, the Directorate distributed road safety awareness stickers to participants to reinforce key safety messages and encourage responsible behaviour among all categories of road users.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Senior Commissioner of Police in charge of Traffic and Road Safety, ACP Norman Musinga, stressed the need for drivers and riders to observe traffic regulations at all times.
Musinga cautioned road users against reckless driving, speeding and other unsafe practices that continue to contribute to road crashes and loss of lives.
He urged boda boda riders, taxi operators, truck drivers and driving school proprietors to embrace road safety sensitisation programmes whenever they are organised, saying such engagements are important in improving compliance with traffic rules.
According to Musinga, road safety is a shared responsibility that requires commitment from drivers, riders, passengers, pedestrians and enforcement agencies.
He said continued awareness campaigns and cooperation between the police and road users will play a vital role in reducing road crashes and saving lives.
