The Head Teacher of St. Joseph’s Secondary School Buhara, Aaron Bikorwomuhangi, has appealed to the government to increase investment in sports at the primary school level, saying early talent identification and development are critical to strengthening Uganda’s future in sports.
Bikorwomuhangi made the appeal during the school’s annual Sports Day held on Friday at St. Kenneth Playground in Buhara Sub-county, Kabale District.
He said inadequate government support for sports in primary schools has weakened talent development, leaving many gifted children without opportunities to develop their abilities before joining secondary school.
According to the head teacher, many rural schools continue to face shortages of sports facilities, equipment, and trained personnel, making it difficult for learners to participate fully in sporting activities.
He urged the government to increase funding for school sports programmes, improve sports infrastructure, and provide schools with the necessary equipment to identify and nurture talent from an early age.
Bikorwomuhangi said strengthening sports at the grassroots level would not only improve Uganda’s performance in national and international competitions but also create opportunities for young people to pursue
Meanwhile, the Parish Priest of Buhara Catholic Parish, Rev. Fr. Dr. Julius Turyatoranwa, emphasized the importance of sports in the holistic development of learners.
He said participation in sports helps students remain physically fit, mentally alert, and disciplined while promoting teamwork, self-confidence, and better academic performance.
Rev. Fr. Dr. Turyatoranwa encouraged learners to actively participate in sporting activities, noting that regular physical exercise contributes to improved mental health and character development.
The chief guest, Buhara Sub-county LCIII Chairperson Francis Niwaha, called upon parents, community members, and other stakeholders to support sports development in schools.

The annual Sports Day attracted students, teachers, parents, and invited guests, with participants competing in various athletics and team sporting disciplines as part of efforts to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and talent development.
