EXCLUSIVE: City Lawyer Eron Kiiza Joins His Client Kakwenza In Exile…

The People’s Platform for Freedom (PFF) deputy secretary general Harold Kaija has confirmed that celebrated Ugandan human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza is currently in a temporary exile in Kenya.

He claims that like other human rights activists, journalists and politicians, Kiiza’s life was threatened and decided to temporary leave the country.

“We are only surviving on God’s mercy because we don’t know what comes tomorrow. My boss Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda is in exile, his social media accounts were also hacked; my good friend and also activists for change in Uganda, Kiiza has also joined him,” Kaija said.

Efforts to get a comment from counsel Kiiza were futile, even though sources close to him revealed that for almost three months, Kiiza has not been in the country after telling them that his life was in danger.

Kiiza was among the legal team representing opposition strongman Dr. Kizza Besigye and his political assistant Haji Obed Lutale at the Criminal Division of the High Court where they are battling charges related to treason.

Besigye’s legal team leader Marth Karua, a Kenyan prominent lawyer was banned from entering Uganda and her assistant Ssalongo Erias Lukwago was kidnapped, charged and imprisoned on charges of mistreason.

In 2024, Kizza was violently arrested at the military court where he was representing Besigye and Lutale, he was convicted on charges of contempt of Court but challenged the conviction at the High Court and he was released on bail.

Kiiza is known to have represented a number of journalists who have faced fabricated criminal charges, activists like author Kakwenza Rukirabashaija who is also in exile after he sneaked out of the country and environmental activists.

Kiiza joins other prominent Ugandans in exile who include Supreme Court judge Esther Kisakye Mayambala, Uganda Law Society president Isaac Ssemakadde and a number of others.
