Prime Minister Nabanja Commends KCCA for Progress on Kampala Road Rehabilitation

After months of demanding faster delivery of road works, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja commended the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for the significant progress made in rehabilitating roads across the city, describing the improvements as a remarkable turnaround since her previous inspection in March.

“I want to thank KCCA, and this is the first time I am thanking you for the work done,” Nabbanja said after inspecting several key road projects across Kampala. “Contractors, I also thank you for addressing the issues we identified during our last inspection. However, continue improving.”

For commuters who have endured years of traffic congestion, dusty roads and deteriorating infrastructure, the inspection offered renewed hope that Kampala’s transport network is steadily being restored.

Accompanied by the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, the State Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi and project contractors, the Prime Minister inspected ongoing works on Fifth Street, Sixth Street, Spring Road, Sentema Road, Kyebando Ring Road, Masiro Road and the access roads to Kadiba Football Ground. The roads are being upgraded under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP).

At every inspection point, the delegation assessed both the quality and pace of construction, comparing the current level of progress with the concerns that had been raised during the previous inspection.

While expressing satisfaction with the improvements made so far, Nabbanja reminded contractors that quality road construction must be complemented by clean, safe and well-organised worksites.

“We need tidy roads,” she said.

“Where construction is ongoing, all debris must be cleared, and soil excavated from drainage channels should not be left along the roadside, especially on Salaama Road.”

The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of maintaining clean and orderly construction sites, noting that proper housekeeping not only protects road users but also prevents drainage blockages and creates a healthier environment for the surrounding communities as the works continue.

During her previous inspections, Nabbanja had expressed concern over construction delays, poor housekeeping and incomplete works.

However, Friday’s inspection found that contractors had addressed many of those shortcomings and made considerable progress.

KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to completing the remaining works while addressing all issues identified during the inspection.

He said construction works on Fifth Street are now nearing completion, with only the expansion of a bridge remaining.

According to Kigenyi, the bridge expansion is expected to be completed within the next three months, a development that will improve drainage capacity and enhance traffic flow along the corridor.

“We are going to expand the bridge and address all the issues that have been identified,” Kigenyi said.

State Minister Kabuye Kyofatogabye appealed to residents living along the project corridors to voluntarily provide land where necessary to facilitate road widening and the construction of pedestrian walkways.

He said the cooperation of local communities would enable government to construct roads that are not only wider but also safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Although several road projects are still under construction, Nabbanja’s public commendation reflects growing confidence that Kampala’s ambitious road rehabilitation programme is steadily gaining momentum and, with sustained attention to quality, timely completion and proper site management, is poised to deliver lasting benefits to the thousands of people who use the city’s roads every day.
