Lawyer Eron Kiiza has claimed that audio recordings which prosecutors have previously linked to the treason case against opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye were destroyed by the man who allegedly possessed the original files, raising fresh questions about evidence in one of Uganda’s most closely watched criminal cases.

Kiiza made the claims in a public statement in which he challenged the prosecution’s narrative surrounding the case against Besigye.

Kiiza recalled the events that culminated in the treason charges began with Besigye’s arrest outside Uganda.

“Back in November 2024, Uganda’s army grabbed opposition leader Kizza Besigye and his friend Obeid Lutale in Nairobi, Kenya, and took them home to face treason charges,” wrote Kiiza.

“That’s the crime of trying to overthrow the government. The crime is so serious they could be hanged if convicted (which the CDF and Yoweri Kaguta Museveni) have already done publicly.”

Besigye, his political aide Hajj Obeid Lutale and UPDF officer Capt. Denis Oola are jointly charged with treason and an alternative count of misprision of treason. The charges were brought before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court after the Supreme Court ruled that civilians should no longer be tried in the General Court Martial, leading to the transfer of the case to the civilian court system. Because treason is a capital offence, the accused were not allowed to enter pleas before the magistrate’s court and the matter is being handled by the High Court.

Court documents filed by the prosecution allege that Besigye and his co-accused participated in meetings held in Switzerland, Greece, Kenya and Uganda between 2023 and 2024 where they allegedly discussed plans to overthrow the government. Prosecutors have also alleged that logistical and financial support was mobilised in furtherance of the alleged plot. The accused have consistently denied the allegations.

Kiiza, however, argued that a key piece of evidence frequently cited in public discussions about the case no longer exists.

“After that, the government pushed a story that Besigye had been planning to hurt or kill President Museveni,” wrote Kiiza.

“A big part of their ‘proof’ was some audio recordings. However, the guy who supposedly had the original recordings (Orlando Andy Wilson) later told police, in March 2025, that he destroyed them. So the real evidence is gone. That same guy also claims he’s the one who let the kidnappers into the room where Besigye was taken, then ‘escaped.'”

Kiiza argued that the alleged destruction of the original recordings raises questions about evidence that has featured prominently in public discussion surrounding the case. The prosecution has not publicly stated that its case depends solely on the disputed recordings, and the criminal proceedings against Besigye and his co-accused remain before the High Court.

Meanwhile, Eron Kiiza has made more shocking revelations on state operatives reportedly hiring a Mzungu to cook evidence against Besigye and Lutale. (See Details Here).
